I dont know if you make money off of mixtapes, i think they're more of an advertising product to build up a buzz leading up to a single or album drop. Personally i have been a co-producer of a mixtape "Sessions from the Beltway Mixtape" (im not an artist, just the man with a idea and a plan), but i never expected to personally profit from it...............Albums on the other, should be what you look to profit from.

There are alot more people on here that know and have done way more than me, so im just giving you my perspective on how i look at things.

you can check out the mixtape "Session From the Beltway Mixtape" on my page. Vol. 2 coming soon.......

let me ask you this, Did You,Have You, or Will You Payed To Get On Any Mixtape Other Than Yours?..........if the funds go to paying for the cost of production of the mixtape, you receive x amout of mixtapes, with drops included, promotions, and a 5-10min set to perform at the album release party.

I haven't but I wouldn't rule it out IF i ever felt it would be worth it.

Sometimes you do have to spend money to make money.

Here's the reality... the mixtape game is on life support and it's dead in this area... matter of fact it was never really born. There's not a big enough support system in the DMV for anyone to profit from selling mixtapes... niggas have a hard enough time selling ALBUMS.

you can make money off anything if the product has a good brand and people like your quality. You will have to give away the first or first couple of serieses, but make sure you get it out to as many people as possible, especially people that will support you. If they are pleased, they'll buy everything you drop. Here's the ticket, you gotta innovate. Do something interesting on the mixtape. Make sure the songs blend. Have some skits and some controversy (if you into that). Make it entertaining, and people will bump that free joint till it's played out (and some CDs NEVER get played out). There are some local CDs that I bought twice when I lost the first copy (like the Multiplexxx, and The Way that I Live), because they were the shit.

I know a DJ from the DMV who moves em' by the thousands but he got Kingpin charges thrown at him not too long ago so you can turn a profit but in the end is it really worth the risk? I believe that if you have an entertainment company to you a mixtape is just like how taste tests are to food companies. Look at WALE for example he dropped some successful free mixtapes & now he has alot more buzz in the streets & round the world when his LP drops than he would've if he had tried to make alot of money off his mixtapes instead. It's a catch 22 cause we did da opposite @ De-U...we've dropped over 15 products since 2000, sold over 300k units, & grossed over a milli independent already...but I bet U've never even heard of us at all...lol!!! Whether U sell, promote, or both...ya gotta hustle!!! Just gotta get it in where U fit in...ya digg!!!

well, it depends on many variables.

#1. Your costs
#2. How much you're selling them for
#3. How many units are you selling.

Now, realistically, Where CAN you sell mixtapes?

- Your website / myspace
- The streets
- Indy record stores if its original music

Mixtapes are soooo played out in my opinion. This is 2009 where Albums are barely selling!!!! You better be giving your mixtape away for FREE, and then you're still lucky if someone listens due to market saturation.

Its all about how hard you grind. Me and my man J Prince been hustlin our own music for a min. Town to town. Not other peoples music. That is played out. Why help give someone else a buzz when you can create your own. Its just like the drug game, when a spot dries up you gotta move on to the next spot. I made loot on our cd's You just gotta go out ther and get it!!!!!! ps the hip hop police cant arrest you for selling your own music!!!!!

I'd hate to post again but If you are unknown and you are trying to SELL your mixtape... that's not a good move. the unknown artists need to give out free music, stream it! bottom line: invest in yourself 1st because if you cant invest in yourself why should i? People follow success, to be successful you have to take RISKS!
