Younger bands seem to have lost their respect & passion for the history & craft that the bands had in the 80's & early 90's just like with the new younger Hip-Hop generation but the true culture of gogo just like in Hip-Hop will never die...not as long as Epitome Band & De-U Records got something to do with it. GOGO 4 Life!!!

i have the feeling alot of people are gonna be afraid to answer this question without fearing of getting "jammed" up for putting down something that this city loves so much. like, how you can expect people from this city to support you (if you a hip hop or r&b artist) if you not into the one thing this city calls it's own, its beloved go-go...feel me? i kinda have the feeling people feel as though embracing hip hop means letting go of go-go as its own...am i wrong in that observation?

again...let me preface that by saying i love hip hop AND i love go-go...i even played in go-go bands and ran sound for many bands back in the day. but i always feel as though people who like go-go got a negative way of how they feel about hip hop...at least from this city...because those same people who say they love go-go and not into hip hop are they same people who go to a club and party like hell to Lil Wayne...or go to a go-go and hear a band do a go-go version of that very same song...but for some reason can't with hip hop if its from this city...why is that?

I have to agree with the previous 2 entries. I would also like to add that the most of the younger bands want national exposure so bad that they deviate away from the true essence of the art form trying to fit it in to the constrants of commercialism to appeal to a national audience. So what you get are gogo songs that fit the musical arrangement of the Industry. If you listen to alot of old gogo, before BYB started rappin all time, it was about the music and the crowd.

The main thing i think younger bands dont understand about gogo is that its not about story telling, so its hard for outsiders to pick up on it. Any other genre of music lyrics are everything, you can always relate to or invision what the song is about. With gogo, the music is everything.....I used to get alot of good compliments from white folks when i was out of the area b/c they grow up playing instruments and trying to start there own rock, metal or whateva kind of band b/c they can appreciate great MUSIC when they hear it and all i heard from the black folks was "is that jungle music" or "what the hell is that".

.Personally i cant enjoy the club b/c its not the same type of party. Back in the day, you would never get fresh to go to the gogo b/c most you would party so hard niggas would be walking out after the show in there boxers, even the drummer would be down to his draws, lol. I guess i was lucky enough to have grown up when gogo was at its peak. Can you image, and i know some of you can, on any given night having the choice to see JY, NEG, or RE at there best.

But once BYB got on the rap shyt and roto toms, it changed the game. Most of the youngins who fuck with BYB like that dont even know you hard they used to crank back around 1992-94. Thats all them youngins know it the back from 1999-present.

Like i always told people, if i wanted to hear rap i would go to the club, but i want to hear gogo so i go to the gogo........And bands back in the day used to hit covers just to warm the crowd up before they got in the groove, listen to some old JY like 92-94, you will hear Buggs say when the crowd was getting hyped on a cover they were hittin that this is just a warm up.

You cant KIRK OUT to Lil Wayne can b/c your to focused on what he is saying, instead of letting the music control your soul.

You are correct about the lost of respect, passion AND work ethic by the younger bands. Alot of bands since the mid-90s just make their own versions of Top 40 traccs instead coming up with their own ORIGINAL & NEW songs like the founding fathers of Go-Go Music: Chuck Brown, RE, EU (yes, I said Experience Unlimited), Trouble Funk, Redd & Tha Boyz, Lil Benny & Da Masters and The Junkyard Band. Come up with new, inovative, and creative songs then the music will grow again.

I'm 41 years old and I grow up on Go Go. I love the old Go Go more then the new. But I still have much respect for all the bands out here. But nothing is like the Black Hole, Cystal Skates, Cherry's and the list goes on. The one thing I hate the most is, all the bs thats comes with going to the go go. As much as we love go go, why do we continue to fight and get clubs shut down because we don't know how to act. Some clubs don't even want go go play in the club. How sad is that, when DC is known for go go. When bama's come from out of town, they need to hear how we do it. It we go to their home town, we hear their dirty south, or whatever they are playing. So what that said, I would love to see go go make a "Change" and party and leave the beefs along. Go Go 4life homie. Great topic. www.ccaaevents.com

C. Wright aka Bam,

I used to feel the same way about clubs not wanting to play gogo, but if you look at it this way, maybe the club owers feel that if you want to hear gogo then go to the gogo. That is the option we have in the area. So i can agree with them from that stand point.

There's not too much incentive for gogo to innovative and progress. They're still getting money and people still have a good time.

I can identify with what everybody's saying.

I'm not saying they have to play go go all night. But all the clubs owners I know, always tell me to tell the DJ's NO go go. I tell them all go go is not bad. Why not have the best of both world. You have people who want to go to a nice club (not a go go) but still hear the lastest or old go go.
